Junk drawer

A junk drawer, everybody has one.  I have found over the years of living in many different places that a junk drawer seems to happen pretty organically.  I’ve never really set out with the intention of a particular drawer becoming a place for “junk”.  As time goes on things just seem to accumulate in a particular place.  Usually odds and ends that don’t really warrant a place of their own.    We all know though that what is in a junk drawer is not actually junk.  It’s usually stuff that you need on hand. Our current junk drawer is in the kitchen close to the patio doors.  This drawer has become a place for anything from bug spray, and birthday candles to broken necklaces and rolls of tape.  There are even water balloons tucked way in the back.  For the most part a junk drawer is what it is,and there is no shame in that.  But every once in a while things accumulate to the point of not being able to open or close the drawer properly.  Here is a photo of our junk drawer before I organized it.

I noticed that it was getting harder to close properly and that there was stuff in there that indeed had a proper home.  So one day while perusing the isles of the lovely dollarama I found a drawer organizer that had different sized compartments.  I instantly thought of the junk drawer and how that might help solve my problem.  The first thing I did when I tackled this project was take everything out of the drawer and wipe it out.  Then I went through item by item and decided what was garbage and what needed to just actually be put away.  Once I pared down the items I started to sort them into my new drawer organizer.  You definitely don’t need to buy an actual drawer organizer.  After following the first steps you could just put your items back in the space as is.  But I liked the idea of the organizer so I gave it a try.   It worked great as you can see!

It still looks like a junk drawer with all the random odds and ends but now I can close the drawer and find things a little easier.  This project took me about 15-20 minutes so a big win for a short amount of time.  Now instead of opening it and thinking in the back of my mind how I really need to do something about that mess, I open it and feel happy looking at the order amidst the chaos.  And anything that can give you even the tiniest bit of peace of mind is worth it.  I believe a cluttered home leads to a cluttered mind.  I really hope this helps you on your journey to getting more order in your life.  Please comment and share your thoughts!  As always if you need a hand on a project I am available.  Please click here for rates and more information.  Happy De-cluttering!
